Glowaiva · Retinol and dark skin

Retinol,
explained in full.

It works. It is also the active people give up on most — almost always because they started too strong, too fast.

What it is

Retinol is a vitamin A derivative. Applied to the skin, it speeds up the turnover of surface cells and stimulates collagen production — the protein that gives skin its firmness.

It is one of the most studied actives in skincare. It is neither new nor a fad.

Why it matters here

The double edge

Retinol acts on dark spots, texture and loss of firmness — three common concerns for melanin-rich skin. But irritated melanin-rich skin can leave a lasting pigmented mark. The risk is not the irritation, it is what it leaves behind.

Hence the rule that governs everything else: you go slowly, and that is the method, not excessive caution.

Who it is for

It is for you if

Wait if

When

In the evening, and there is a reason

Retinol breaks down in light and increases sun sensitivity. And above all: between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m., collagen production peaks following the skin's circadian rhythm. So you apply the active when the skin is working hardest.

How — the three months

Month 1

Once or twice a week

The lowest concentration, in the evening, on thoroughly dry skin. Moisture increases both penetration and irritation.

Month 2

Increase the frequency

Only if no irritation lingers. Otherwise, stay on month 1 for as long as it takes.

Month 3

Raise the concentration

Toward 0.5% if your skin keeps up. Otherwise keep what works — there is no prize for going higher.

The full range runs from 0,025 % à 0,5 %, over about three months.

What comes next

Never the same night

Alternating works: retinol on even nights, exfoliant on odd nights.

The next morning's non-negotiable

Sunscreen in the morning, no exceptions. Retinol increases sun sensitivity — without protection, you cancel the benefit.

Caution

Contraindication

Retinol and vitamin A derivatives are contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding. So are AHAs and BHAs at high concentrations.

Slow down if

These are not required stages. They are signals to go slower.
